Your package speed is only half the story — where you put the router matters just as much. Here are five quick fixes.
Many speed complaints are not about the internet line at all, but about how the Wi-Fi signal travels inside the house. Here are five things you can do today.
1. Move the router to the centre of the home
Wi-Fi travels in every direction. A router in the corner wastes half of its signal on your neighbour's wall.
2. Keep it out of cupboards
Metal, mirrors and thick concrete block the signal badly. Keep the router in the open, ideally above table height.
3. Use the 5 GHz band for nearby devices
5 GHz is much faster over short distances. Keep 2.4 GHz for devices further away.
4. Restart the router monthly
A quick reboot clears memory and reconnects to the strongest upstream path.
5. Secure your network
Change the default password so no one else is using the bandwidth you are paying for.
